Arrival by train

“Green and sustainable” in the Möll and Drau valleys

If you want a quiet, calm and relaxed journey and want to travel in a climate-friendly way, it is best to choose the train.

Traveling by train to Mallnitz in Carinthia—a well-known national park destination and mountaineering village—couldn’t be easier or more convenient. The Mallnitz train station is wheelchair-accessible and is served hourly by domestic and international trains. In Mallnitz, an Alpine Pearls destination, sustainable travel is a key focus, which naturally includes eco-friendly transportation to the area.

In the Drau Valley, the Oberdrauburg and Greifenburg-Weissensee stations are served by ÖBB Railjets. The Carinthian S-Bahn line S6 (formerly S1) runs hourly and stops at all towns in the Drau Valley.

"Scenic and individual" on beautiful roads on vacation

Traveling by car to the Hohe Tauern National Park region in Carinthia is probably the most scenic way to get there, taking you through beautiful landscapes and breathtaking natural scenery.

If you’re coming from the north, you have several options: The A10 Tauern Autobahn takes you quickly and directly south, though it’s also very popular and heavily trafficked during peak season. For a more personalized journey, drive through the Gastein Valley and board the car train in Böckstein, which will take you safely and quickly via the car ferry to the Mallnitz train station. In summer, you can also use the “Queen of Pass Roads,” the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, for your journey and immediately get a glimpse of the spectacular world of the Hohe Tauern (closed in winter!). 

Breathtaking views also await you on the drive along the Felbertauern Road. If you’re coming from the west, the best route is through South and East Tyrol via the Puster Valley. From the east, take the A2 Südautobahn and the Villach interchange to reach the Hohe Tauern National Park region. Coming from the south, you can reach us via the SS52 over the Plöcken Pass (Note: possible closures—please check in advance) or the A32 via Tarvisio and Arnoldstein.

Offer bike rental in the Hohe Tauern:

If you want to go on a bike tour in the National Park region, you are welcome to rent a bike on site.

The National Park Region is part of the Carinthia-wide bike rental system of the company Papin Sport. You can use a cross-regional bike rental system, in which all Carinthian regions are integrated. It is therefore possible to rent a bike in all of Carinthia and return it later at about 50 rental stations throughout the province.

Great offer for leisure cyclists and hikers:

From March 28 to April 6, 2026, and from May 30 to September 13, 2026, the ÖBB Tauernsprinter will run daily between Villach and Mallnitz and on to the neighboring Salzburg region (Gastein Valley and Schwarzach-St. Veit).

A 75-kilometer cycling route runs from Mallnitz to Villach, offering plenty of interesting places to stop along the way. This route is ideal not only for cyclists but also for hikers, making for a wonderful day trip with friends and family!
