When the days get shorter and the larches turn golden yellow, one of the most beautiful hiking seasons of the year begins in the Hohe Tauern National Park. September and October beckon with clear air, quiet paths and impressive views - and no one has to miss out on the culinary experience either. Because some of our huts keep their doors open for longer and invite you to extend the mountain summer.

Insider tips for young and old explorers

Autumn shows many faces in the Hohe Tauern National Park - and the routes to the huts are just as varied. There is a suitable route depending on your mood, fitness level and company:

  • For families with children: A leisurely trail to the Zandlacher Hütte in the Reißeck area - ideal for little hikers, with short stages, lots of nature experiences and space to play around the hut.

  • For dog owners: the route to Winklerner Hütte. A relaxed hike awaits two- and four-legged friends with plenty of space for breaks and wide alpine pastures.

  • For mountain bikers: a sporty excursion to the Polinikhütte above Obervellach. Accessible via the forest path, it offers fantastic views as far as Lake Millstatt.

  • For summit and altitude lovers: a more challenging tour to the Kaiser Franz-Josef-Haus on the Grossglockner - at 2,369 meters you are rewarded with a panorama of the three-thousand-metre peaks and a view of the glacier.

A stop at a mountain hut is an essential part of a successful autumn hike. And what would Carinthia be without its culinary classics? Be sure to try a portion of Carinthian Kasnudeln, homemade spaetzle with spicy mountain cheese or a sweet Kaiserschmarrn - just the thing after a fresh autumn tour.
