Danielsberg: Oldest settlement in Upper Carinthia

Hardly any other place in Carinthia is as historically exciting as the Danielsberg in Mölltal. The cone-shaped elevation was settled around 6,000 years ago and is one of the oldest settlements in Upper Carinthia.

A place of power for 6000 years

The Danielsberg is often referred to as a myth, a place of power that people apparently knew about early on. The cone is said to have been inhabited for the first time more than 6,000 years ago. Stone tools found in 1990 during excavations in the sanctuary of the church on the mountain prove that the area was settled in prehistoric times. This confirmed that the Danielsberg is one of the oldest Neolithic settlement sites in the region.

Church on the summit

The church dedicated to St. George stands on the summit, around 966 meters above sea level. It attracts around 10,000 visitors a year as a cultural monument, but probably also because of the magnificent view of the Mölltal valley. The Danielsberg is an ideal excursion destination for young and old and the Herkuleshof invites you to eat and drink. A particularly large number of people come at the end of April, on St. George's Sunday, for the star pilgrimage on the Danielsberg.

Water gushes from a spring

A spring on the mountain is likely to have been the decisive factor in this; the water still bubbles out of the ground there today, now collected in a small pond. Directly in front of an inn and hotel on the mountain, which was once built as a hunting lodge. There used to be moor baths for guests, today the Herkuleshof is a popular venue for weddings. The entire mountain was declared a nature reserve in 1964 due to its unique landscape.

Hiking on the Alpe-Adria-Trail

The Alpe-Adria-Trail connects the three regions of Carinthia, Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia over a total of 43 stages and around 750 km.
The long-distance hiking trail leads from the foot of Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner, through the most beautiful Carinthian mountain and lake regions and without any major detours to the point where the three countries of Austria, Italy and Slovenia meet and on to the Adriatic Sea in Muggia. One of these stages also leads past the Danielsberg and invites you to linger, marvel and discover.
